The majority of them are in Chad and in Cameroon where WFP has had to declare an emergency. Most of these people are women and children and many of the children are malnourished so, basically we need more funds to cope with this emergency."

Since the fighting intensified in Central African Republic (CAR) in December last year, more than 220,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. 97,000 of them found shelter in Chad.
Over 16,000 were airlifted from Bangui to Chad's capital, Ndjamena. These children are using a wall in the camp where they are living to draw images from their experience of flying.
The majority of refugees from CAR are in Chad and Cameroon where the World Food Programme has declared an emergency, since “most of the refugees are women and children and they are malnourished”, said Tiziana Zoccheddu of WFP Chad.In some camps, global acute malnutrition rates are surpassing 25%, well above the emergency threshold (15%).
In the health center of the refugee camp in Sahr, children from CAR are tested and treated for malnutrition.
The rainy season that has just begun bringing further risks for refugees, since most of them live in makeshift camps where the rain easily finds its way inside the tents.
“We are expecting also that the rainy season might provoke an increase in disease which may in turn also worsen the nutritional state of children." – said Zoccheddu.
Sido lies just across the border with CAR. There are 13 000 refugees in this camp.
In order to respond faster to the logistical challenges of sending food to Sido, WFP provides vouchers to families from CAR living in the camp which enables them to buy a variety of foods from selected vendors and also helps the local economy.
28,000 persons in Chad have received voucher assistance so far – value of US$13 monthly, which is - according to WFP, enough to feed one person for a month.
WFP will need additional funds to continue the voucher distribution programme after June 2014.
In Cameroon, WFP has launched an eight-month emergency response operation to assist refugee populations that targets 100,000 people at a cost of US$ 15.6 million. So far, no contributions have been received.
