A repatriation ceremony was today (27 May) held for the fallen three soldiers from Uganda serving with AMISOM killed in the line of duty during the Saturday’s raid on the Somali parliament by Shabaab terrorists.
The deceased were part of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) that responded to the attack that also claimed the lives of 4 Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers and one Somali police officer.
During the Saturday mid-morning attack, an explosives-laden car was detonated near the main entrance to the parliament building in Mogadishu while the parliament was in session and Al Shabaab ground fighters entered the building where they engaged in a fierce fight with a joint force comprising Somali security forces and AMISOM troops.
A quick response team of the Somali National Army, supported by AMISOM security personnel, immediately deployed to the area and countered the attack evacuating all Members of Parliament safely from the building.
The Deputy Force Commander in-charge Operations and Plans Major General Geoffrey Muheesi presiding over the ceremony on behalf of African Union commended the bravery and resolute the late soldiers exhibited for the Pan Africanism cause, their country Uganda and for the liberation of the African people.
“The death of our comrades, I hope it will not die in vain. They died on duty; they died on a Ugandan call and on a Somali call and UPDF. My brothers let’s stick to those calls, the calls of Somalis, the call of Uganda and most importantly the call of Pan Africanism,” said General Muheesi.
The AMISOM mission comprises over 22,000 of soldiers from African countries, including over 6,000 peacekeepers from Uganda.
Major General Muheesi sent his condolences to the families and friends of all those who suffered in Saturdays attack and wished a swift recovery for those injured, adding that “Such attacks are aimed at mere publicity and to divert the world from the fact that al Shabaab has been largely defeated in Somalia. Our resolve to rid Somalia of these terrorists will not be cowed by these cowardly acts.”
