Storyline

The Security Council today (27 May) adopted a resolution revising the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in order to better address the security, humanitarian and political crisis facing the country.

After weeks of negotiations the draft resolution streamlined the UNMISS mandate to focus on protection of civilians; human rights; humanitarian assistance; and the implementation of the cessation of hostilities agreement.

South Sudan’s Ambassador Francis Deng, who is a former UN official, said that “for many of us who knew the background to UNMISS presence in our country as an agent of goodwill and support, it was indeed a source of discomfort to witness anti UN demonstrations.”

Deng said “the Security Council, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the government of South Sudan have worked closely together to resolve our differences and misunderstandings in the new configuration of UNMISS”

He added that although South Sudan’s government “has had some reservations about some of the elements in the renewed mandate, we hope that with our shared concerns and better communication, our cooperation will be enhanced.”

The previous mandate was to expire on 1 July.
