“World Food Programme is currently undertaking a major airlift and airdrop operation in Maban, this is to enable and re supply the refugee camps in this location. The resupply routes by road and by river have been affected by ongoing conflict, due to fighting and insecurity it has forced WFP and it’s partners to provide reduced rations to the refugees. By using airdrops and airlifts we will be able to provide much needed assistance to these people.”

Storyline

With the number of refugees from South Sudan in neighbouring countries reaching well beyond 300 000, the World Food Programme (WFP) said it is struggling to cope with providing food assistance and that the ongoing fighting is pushing the country forward “hunger catastrophe”.

In Ethiopia only, there are now over 120 000 refugees from South Sudan, with new refugees arriving every day.

So far, WFP and its partners have provided food for more than 866 000 South Sudanees in over 125 locations in the country.

In Maban county in Upper Nile State, there are over 125 000 displaced people living in 4 camps.

WFP needs 2300 metric tons each month to feed these refugees and vulnerable host communities.

The ongoing conflict makes regular delivery of supplies by road impossible, forcing WFP to resource to airlift and even airdrop operations, thus reducing the rations to those in need.

WFP plans to provide assistance to at least 3.2 million people by the end of 2014. However, it currently has a funding shortfall of US$412 million and it is in need of substantial donor support.
