The International Criminal Court (ICC) decided today (12 June) that the prosecutor had submitted enough evidence to send to trial former president of Cote d'Ivoire Laurent Gbagbo, charging him with four accounts of crimes against humanity: murder, rape, persecution and other inhumane acts.
Some 3000 people were killed after Gbagbo refused to accept defeat in the November 2010 presidential elections, plunging the country into civil war.
The ICC based their decision on statements of 108 witnesses, more than 22 000 pages of supporting documents as well as large amount of audio and video material.
Gbagbo was the president of Cote d'Ivoire for 11 years when he was arrested by forces loyal to Ouattara in April 2011.
He is the first former head of state to be detained by the ICC.
