Storyline

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) opened its high-level segment in Nairobi with the participation of Prince Albert II of Monaco and president Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya among others, as the first session of the world environment body entered its fourth day.

The High-level Segment is set to deliberate on two environmental topics of major international significance: the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) and the Post-2015 Development Agenda, including Sustainable Consumption and Production, and the Illegal Trade in Wildlife.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Uhuru Kenyata of Kenya said that his country “remains fully committed to the ideals which the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) was established to pursue. My government will therefore work closely with you so we can implement your mandate.”

Prince Albert II of Monaco said “we owe it to the present and the future generations of all species to rise up and walk. It is in that spirit that we address this first United Nations Environment Assembly with the conviction that what we do here and after will have a significant impact in the protection and preservation of our natural resources.”

He stressed “it is our responsibility towards our children and our grandchildren.”

The President of the UN General Assembly John Ashe said “the artificial divide between development and environment should not longer exist.”

Also speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Environment of Mongolia and President of the first UNEA session Oyun Sanjaasuren said “we have a great responsibility to promote environmental sustainability and to achieve sustainable development for all of us and our future generations towards a life of dignity for all.”

Finally, UNEP executive director Achim Steiner said “in Swahili, there is a wonderful term that speaks both to UNEP and UN in Kenya, but also to you as delegates here at the first United Nations Environment Assembly. “Together we will move forward.”

During the ceremony, the Senegalese musician Baaba Maal sang and played the West African instrument known as the kora.

UNEA will close its doors on Friday June 27th 2014, following a Ministerial Plenary on the SDGs and Post-2015 Development Agenda.

UNEA is the highest-level UN body ever convened on the environment. It enjoys universal membership of all 193 UN member states as well as other stakeholder groups.
