“54 years ago, remember how our situation was, how our goodwill was and how open our hearts were. So much has been recalled tonight and we sang songs from that era tonight but today is like that day as well. It is the day we are reborn. We want the Somali people to understand the situation we find ourselves in today despite the setbacks of the last thirty years,” he said. “But starting from the Arta Process in 2000 until today, we have been laying the foundations of statehood brick by brick. Today that structure stands at a good place and it just needs some finishing and covering and we hope to get a good home out of it.”

Storyline

Hundreds of Somalis gathered Monday night (30 June) at the General Kaahiye Police Academy on the eve of Somalia’s Independence Day. On 1st July 1960, Somalia gained independence from colonial power Italy.

The day also marked the occasion of its unity with British Somaliland, which had been granted independence 4 days earlier.

The 54th anniversary celebration was attended by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari and other government officials and dignitaries including the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) Ambassador Nicholas Kay.
