Storyline

Iraq’s northern region of Kurdistan has become host to thousands of Iraqis displaced by fighting elsewhere in the country. The semi-autonomous region is also sheltering over 200,000 refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria.

As the fighting in Iraq continues and more people are displaced, the world must not forget about Syrian refugees, says United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres.

Guterres made the comments while visiting a refugee camps in Sulaymaniyah, host to 400 families.

25,000 Syrians have sought shelter in this small city in Kurdistan. 23,000 of them are living in urban settings, and the rest in tented settlements like the Arbat camp.

Arbat camp, home to over 2,000 displaced Syrians. The surrounding mountains do little to ease searing summer heat. The camp lies on the outskirts of Sulaymaniyeh in northern Iraq. Mohamed has been living here since August 2012. He is 12 years old and was a high-achieving student in Syria. His dreams and ambitions, now interrupted by war.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud, Syrian refugee:
“When were there and everyday when I come from school I see on the street people and they are killed and it was me and my brother, we became very scared and we run very fast to our home and shout, and mu mum open, we go to home and we close the door, we stay till the situation becomes better.”

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees visited Mahmoud’s camp this week, stopping by his tent.
Mohammed told Mr. Guterres about the home and the friends he sorely misses.

Many Syrian children have been taken out of school by war, and and with the conflict showing no end in sight, more are at risk of becoming a lost generation. But the children of Syria must not be forgotten, said the High Commissioner.

SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres:
“What we are afraid is that with so many crisis, Iraq, Syria, the Ukraine, Libya, South Sudan, that there might be in international community less commitment, less support, but let’s not forget that Syria is the mega protracted crisis of our times, almost three million registered refugees, more than 6.5 million people displaced inside Syria, a country that has been torn apart.”

Mohammed dreams of the day he goes back to Syria.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mahmoud, Syrian refugee:
“When I come back to Syria and when my first day, I will go, I will think I am like a bird and I will fly in the sky because I am happy to go and come back to Syria, it’s my hope and I wish to go to Syria, soon.”

Three years into the conflict, life at the camp has become less transient and more mundane. But traditions are held on to, an ever-lasting memory of happier times back home.
