Storyline

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK's) Ambassador Ri Tong Il said today (1 Aug) that “the US and South Korea joint military exercises is the root cause of the aggravation of tension on the Korean Peninsula.”

Speaking to reporters in New York, Ri said that as long as those military exercises are not removed, “the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula cannot be guaranteed no matter how long it goes.”

Ri also noted that on July 21st, the DPRK presented formal request to the Security Council to open emergency meeting with regard to those exercises.

He said “if the UN Security Council is genuinely serious about the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula, the Security Council should put in the agenda this question of joint military exercises of the US and South Korea and discuss the matter very seriously.”

The DPRK’s diplomat added “so far, there’s no reply from the president –maybe it is a silent presidia- . I don’t think it is a silent presidia.”

He stressed “they are disregarding simply. Ignoring simply. This is showing the serious working method of the UN Security Council, which is a command concern of the UN Member States.”

Ri underlined “as long as the UN Security Council continues to disregard and turn away from this formal request if the DPRK in contravention of its mandate for international peace and security, DPRK will go alone the path of its own choice.”
