Commenting on the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, United Kingdom’s ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the United States have completed about 60 percent of treatment of the priority A chemicals on the ship the Cape Ray”, adding in that “once that the transformation or treatment is completed then the affluent will be sent to Germany and Finland for final disposal.”
In close consultations, Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator for the OPCW-UN Joint Mission, briefed today (5 Aug) the Security Council by video teleconference on that Mission’s continuing work.
She reported to the Council on the work that has been taking place to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons, which, have now been completely taken out of the country.
Speaking to reporters outside the Security Council, Lyall Grant said “she referred in particular to a meeting today in Beirut to workout the modality of the destruction for the destruction of the twelve remaining declared production facilities, which she said would take around six months or so to complete.”
He also said “I briefed in my national capacity to say that the UK would complete its destruction of the B precursors and hydrochloric acid in the course of this week. So, good progress on eth destruction of chemicals outside Syria.”
Finally, the British diplomat noted that Sigrid Kaag also briefed about the ongoing discussions around the discrepancies in the Syrian government’s initial declaration.
He also said “there will be a further visit by the OPCW team in September to Damascus. And also a number of members raised the questions of allegations of further use of particularly chlorine-based explosive devices in recent weeks.”
The removal of the most critical material for destruction began in early January, in line with an agreement brokered by Russia and the United States, by which Syria renounced its chemical weapons material and joined 1992 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons.
