On 11 August the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) launched a special food distribution aiming to reach 730,000 conflict-affected people in Gaza.
WFP has distributed emergency ready-to-eat food for over 260,000 displaced people who have taken refuge in UNRWA schools.
Over 2,000 people are sheltered at the Rimal Prep Girls School while the Ahmad Shawqi Secondary School shelters 743 displaced Palestinians.
They receive food parcels of 10 kg rice and 30 kg of wheat flour. Emergency ready-to-eat food, includes canned meat, canned beans and bread.
Prior to the Gaza crisis WFP and UNRWA were already reaching 1.1 million people.
In addition to providing emergency food assistance, WFP has re-started regular food distributions in Gaza, planning to reach the 285,000 people registered with WFP’s original assistance programme prior to the recent conflict.
WFP needs an immediate $48 million to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to people affected by the conflict in Gaza. In addition, WFP needs $20 million to continue its regular programmes in Gaza and the West Bank until the end of the year.
