Storyline

North Korean Ambassador Ri Tong Il told reporters in New York today (25 August) that the joint military exercises currently being conducted by South Korea and the United States are “not simply an annual routine defensive nature military exercise as the US shamelessly continues to advertise to the international community, but this is strictly and totally aggression war exercises and total nuclear war exercises targeted against the DPRK.”

Ri Tong Il said “the United States is not hiding the fact this is purely and totally aimed at Pyongyang occupation by openly declaring they are applying the tailored, so-called tailored deterrence strategy to this exercise.”

The tailored deterrence strategy, he said, “is what the US and South Korea finally agreed last year, October, US South-Korea joint annual security consultation meeting.”

The North Korean Ambassador told reporters that a letter had been sent to the Security Council requesting an emergency meeting to deal with the matter.

He said that if the Council does not take up the issue, “it will send a very wrong message to the international community.”

He added that the Council continues to be “silent” with regard “to the United States who has continued to deploy for over half a century, for six decades, whatever number of troops, whatever number of weapons of mass destruction including nuclear weapons, in the doorstep of the DPRK.”

This year's US.-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercise is reportedly taking place from 20 to 31 August in and around the Korean peninsula.
