"This draft resolution is aimed at drawing international attention to the odious crimes and massive, generalized and systematic human rights violations committed by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant against innocent Iraqi civilians ,particularly since the tenth of June. These massive violations caused a humanitarian crisis and the flight of large number of people from regions controlled by this terrorist organization. The stakes are high because the human rights violations committed by the so-called Islamic State continue to grow in the territories under its control, particularly with regard to religious minorities."

"My question is: Is there a request for a vote on this draft resolution? That does not seem to be the case. May I take it therefore that draft resolution S-22/l can be adopted? It is so decided. "GAVEL

Storyline

The UN Human Rights office will send a mission to Iraq to investigate violations committed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and, identify those responsible for the crimes with a view to bringing them to justice.

This follows a unanimous decision taken by the Human Rights Council in Geneva today at the end of a day- long emergency session on the subject.

Introducing the resolution Nicolas Niemtchinow, of France, said it was aimed at drawing international attention to the odious crimes and massive, generalized and systematic violations committed by ISIL against innocent Iraqi civilians.

These massive violations had caused a humanitarian crisis and led to the flight of a large number of people from regions controlled by the terrorist organization. Ambassador Niemtchinow said the problem was important because ISIL's violations of the human rights of Iraqis, particularly religious minorities were increasing.

The ambassador said the resolution called for the speedy dispatch of a mission from the High Commissioner's office to investigate abuses in order to ensure that the perpetrators of crimes were brought to justice.

It also called on the international community to help civilians displaced by the crisis and to provide technical assistance to the Iraqi government in the area of human rights.
