“We’ve been updating you over the weekend on the situation in the Golan Heights with our peacekeepers, including the safe passage of the Filipino forces that had been surrounded by armed elements in Positions 68 and 69 in UNDOF. Meanwhile, the 45 Fijian peacekeepers forced from Position 27 in Golan on 28 August continue to be detained by armed elements. At this time, no additional information on their status or location has been established. The United Nations continues to seek their immediate and unconditional release.”

“The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has confirmed that the number of Fijian peacekeepers currently held is 45, and not 44 as previously reported. The discrepancy is due to the movement of two personnel on the ground immediately prior to the detention of the troops.”

The United Nations (UN) spokesperson said that “the 45 Fijian peacekeepers are continue to be detained by armed elements in Golan Heights.”
The fighters from Nusra Front attacked the soldiers of the UN peacekeeping force UNDOF that was monitoring the ceasefire in the Golan Heights for 40 years. The 45 Fijians were captured on Thursday; 72 Filipinos were besieged at two locations for following two days, when they finally managed to escape to safety.
The UN said it has no information of location of captured soldiers.
