4. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:
“Many of the victims that perished in the Mediterranean in the last week, hundreds of people that drowned in the Mediterranean last week, were Syrians. And it breaks my heart to see Syrians that have suffered so much in their country, with their houses bombed, with their families being killed, now dying in the Mediterranean just trying to reach safety in Europe.”

The heads of UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) held a joint press conference today (17 Sept) to address Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon.
During the press conference, held in the Lebanese capital, UNHCR High Commissioner António Guterres said that “the Syria conflict is not only the worst humanitarian crisis of our times, but that it represents a major threat for the stability of the region, and now more and more, a threat for global peace and security.”
Gueterres expressed anger at the number of Syrian refugees dying while trying to reach Europe by sea. He said “it breaks my heart to see Syrians that have suffered so much in their country, with their houses bombed, with their families being killed, now dying in the Mediterranean just trying to reach safety in Europe.”
The High Commissioner asked European countries to take in more Syrians to stop the tragedy at sea.
He also asked the international community to provide more financial support to Lebanon as it struggles to host more than a million refugees, a quarter of its population.
