Life is slowly returning to normal in Ragga Ele town, in the Middle Shabelle region of Somalia following its liberation from al Shabaab. The town was captured without resistance on 1 October 2014 by a joint force made up of troops from the Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
AMISOM and SNA officers walked the streets of Ragga Ele this morning (3 October) to meet some of the town’s residents and discuss with them how security can be further improved.
‘Operation Indian Ocean’ was launched in August this year to recover more territory from al Shabaab, with specific focus on towns along the coast of the Indian Ocean.
“Today, you can also be a witness to the fact that business is back to normal. We are here, AMISOM and SNA and have spoken to the communities, mothers, children and they are very happy. They have confidence in us and are very happy with Operation Indian Ocean. They also took part in the operation and they welcomed us warmly. We are very confident that we can work with this community,” said General Mohamed Hassan Qarfow, the SNA Commander.
The officers chatted with diverse members of the community, like traditional elders and traders, in a bid to understand the challenges they faced under al Shabaab’s tyrannical rule.
“The team from the Burundi contingent has just met the local people of Ragge Ele to gauge the situation here because the al Shabaab has moved away, so that we can establish a relationship between the civilians and the military. We establish this relationship in order to know what is going on here exactly. With our brothers the SNA, we have to secure this sector. The Burundian contingent under AMISOM, has to secure this sector, establish good relations and help ensure peace and security,” said Col. Nbayambaje Reverie who commands AMISOM’s Burundi contingent.
The joint SNA and AMISOM force’s next objective is to liberate the port town of Kadale - which is also in Middle Shabelle. A major offensive is planned in the coming days to capture the scenic town of Barawe, al Shabaab’s last stronghold.
