A memorial was held for nine peacekeepers from Niger killed last week in northern Mali, while in Kidal, indirect fire on a MINUSMA camp has left one dead and one wounded. The initial assessment is ongoing.
Head of the UN peacekeeping Herve Ladsous promised to bring to justice killers of 30 peacekeepers who had lost their lives since the beginning of the UN mission in Mali.
The soldiers from Niger were killed in an ambush on Friday (3 Oct) in what was the deadliest attack on the UN peacekeepers in Mali so far.
The men were remembered at a ceremony in Bamako, country’s capital.
Last Friday the Security Council issued a statement saying attacks targeting peacekeepers could constitute war crimes under international law.
The UN has been supporting Mali's recovery from a crisis which started with a military coup in early 2012.
