5. SOUNDBITE (English) Melissa Fleming, Spokesperson, United nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR):
“It was reportedly started and sparked by a grenade attack in one of the districts of Bangui on the 7th of October. It killed four people and the alleged attacker was caught and believed to have been killed and it was followed by attacks on civilians that left around nine people dead and 55 injured. This was after a period of relative hopeful quiet in Bangui so all of us are extremely concerned and disturbed.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Melissa Fleming, Spokesperson, United nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR):
“We have reports that large numbers of people, at least 6,500, have been newly displaced by this current violence. And again it’s very difficult for us to go and help them because of the blatant attacks on humanitarian workers. Our cars were surrounded, rocks thrown, etc.”

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said that the recent outbreak of violence in parts of Bangui, Central African Republic (CAR), is badly hampering humanitarian activities in the city, with civilians, humanitarian workers and UN peacekeepers being targeted.
More than 6,500 people are estimated to have been displaced due to the violence although UNHCR said this figure could be much higher.
UNHCR is calling on all parties involved in the conflict to respect humanitarian work and allow unhindered humanitarian access to relief agencies who are working to support thousands of displaced people in desperate need.
Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for UNHCR, said that this latest outbreak of violence is of great concern: “It was reportedly started and sparked by a grenade attack in one of the districts of Bangui on the 7th of October. It killed four people and the alleged attacker was caught and believed to have been killed and it was followed by attacks on civilians that left around nine people dead and 55 injured. This was after a period of relative hopeful quiet in Bangui so all of us are extremely concerned and disturbed.”
UNHCR said that some shops have now reopened and traffic started moving yesterday but the situation in Bangui remains tense.
There are around 410,000 internally displaced people in the Central African Republic including over 60,000 in 34 sites in Bangui. A further 420,000 refugees from CAR have fled to neighbouring countries.
