“I can’t imagine condemning the people of Darfur to perpetual conflict and instability they have suffered long enough for my short period here what I see can’t be a sustainable option and it is for that reason I urge the government of Sudan and the rebels movements to rethink their various approaches, and to find the political well and courage to reach out to each other and use dialog as the way out of the current conflict.”

The outgoing Joint Africa Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur and Joint Chief Mediator, Mohamed Ibn Chambas on Saturday (18 October) spoke about issues covering protection of civilian, hopes for peace in Darfur and the streamlining of troops and civilians.

Speaking on issues of the implementation of the missions mandate during his tenure Chambas praised the work performed by his staff.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Joint AU-UN Special Representative for Darfur, Head of UNAMID and Joint Chief Mediator:

On his vision of the future for the region of Darfur he expressed his hope that the people of Darfur find peace and prosperity

While speaking about the mission downsizing it staff Chambas appealed to the Sudanese government to speed up the process of approval of new battalions.

On the topic of rebuilding and development of the region of Darfur he said he was hopeful regarding the commitment from the international community

Chambas has served as UNAMID head for more than a year and expressed hope that his successor will continue to implement UNAMID goals towards peace in Darfur.
