“It is more dangerous to be a woman in conflict than to be a soldier, because women are targeted in terms of rape, their homes are destroyed their children are killed, their husbands are killed. So they as women who hold the fabric of society become the victim and that breaks the community and brakes the families, So that is why we say in terms of rape when you rape a woman you don’t only rape a woman, you rape a family, you rape a community and you destroy the community.”

When women were been raped because of being a specific ethnic groups. And I think the president has agreed today to be a champion to support not only in dealing with that problem in South Sudan but around the world to join all our male champions heads of states who have taken this issue.”

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Bangura arrived on Sunday (5 Oct) in Juba, South Sudan to verify allegations of sexual violence in the war-torn country.
The visit came amid allegations of sexual violence in South Sudan, which fell into chaos in December after President Salva Kiir accused his sacked vice president Riek Machar of plotting to overthrow his regime.
During her visit to the Protection of Civilians area (POC) at UN compound, Mrs. Banguria met with women and community leaders and said that it is more dangerous to be a woman in conflict than to be a soldier.
Today Bangura met with President Salva Kiir and discussed concrete measures that can be undertaken for the prevention of and response to the violations taking place, including critical support to survivors.
She said she hopes that at the end of her visit the government will sign an agreement to deal with specific issues, challenges that have to do with sexual violence in South Sudan.
The use of sexual violence has been a distinct feature in the conflict that broke out in South Sudan in December 2013 between pro-government forces and opposition fighters. Reported incidents of sexual violence include rape, gang rape, forced abortion and sexual harassment by all sides.
There are also grave concerns regarding the ethnic dimensions of the conflict particularly between Dinka and Nuer communities, with reports of collective punishment using sexual violence fueling reprisals and a cycle of revenge.
