Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman told the Security Council that “Israel’s policy and practices of settling parts of its population and new immigrants in the occupied Palestinian territory, including occupied East Jerusalem, are in violation of international law.”
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting today (29 Oct) to discuss Israeli plans to build more Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.
The urgent talks were requested by Jordan following a letter from Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour, who called on the 15-member council to "address this crisis situation in occupied east Jerusalem."
Speaking to members of the Security Council, Jeffrey Feltman also said “the status quo is not a viable option. Further delay in the pursuit of peace will only exacerbate the conflict further and deepen divisions.”
He added “now is the time for bold leadership, for both sides to fully commit to meaningful negotiations that will allow the establishment of two states, living side by side in peace and security.”
Also speaking to members of the Security Council, Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour said “Israel, the occupying Power, must be demanded to cease immediately and completely its illegal settlement activities throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and to cease all provocations and incitement at the Holy Sites in Occupied East Jerusalem and against the Palestinian people and their leadership.”
He also said “we therefore reiterate our appeal to the members of the Security Council and the international community to support our initiative and to adopt a resolution reaffirming the fundamental parameters of the two-State solution and delineating a time frame to bring an end to the Israeli occupation and to achieve the independence and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.”
Speaking to reporters outside the Security Council, Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor said “Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people, and building housing units in Jerusalem for children in Givat HaMatos in places where there are Jewish neighbourhoods is something that we will continue to do because Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people.”
After a journalist interrupted him pointing out that building more settlements in East Jerusalmen was illegal, Prosor underlined “it is not illegal.”
