Storyline

The second UNIDO Forum on Partnerships to scale up Investment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, a 2-day event in Vienna, Austria, brings together more than 400 participants from 93 countries, including heads of State and government, ministers, the UN, the private sector and NGOs.

Key speakers included LI Yong, the Director General of UNIDO and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who delivered their remarks on the inclusive and sustainable industrial development and concrete goals on how to achieve it wordwide.

The UNIDO Forum will look at new programmes and partnerships to enhance development and strengthen the economic growth, with sustainable approach to preserving the planet's resources.

At the event, Li Yong said "we have been working on a global development setting defined by the millennium development goals for the last 15 years. The MDG (millennium development goals) have led to great achievements in poverty reduction, but large populations are still struggling for real change. If we want to achieve the necessary scale of development, we have to explore the full potential of inclusive and sustainable industrial development."

Also speaking at the Forum, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the UN is dealing with many emergencies, conflicts, human rights abuses and now the Ebola crisis. These are daily reminders that our world is interconnected and that we have to join forces for our shared future.”

He added “that is why the United Nations is not just coping with the daily crisis; we are also addressing the underlying causes including poverty and environmental degradation. The overarching imperative for our planet's future is sustainable development."

Ban stressed "to trigger large scale transformation we need to encourage economies to expand from farms to factories. The agricultural sector can generate jobs in light manufacturing industries like food processing. Those industries can be labour intensive leading to more jobs and higher employment, meaning greater social inclusion. Greater social inclusion leads to better security and lasting peace."

The UNIDO forum will closely examine and endorse new pilot partnership programmes for inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Ethiopia and Senegal. Experts from the Organization have visited the two countries in the course of the last months to take into account the current situation in both countries and have identified a number of strong partners, both local and international. As a result, two Programmes for Country Partnerships have been designed.

UNIDO’s work in the field of inclusive and sustainable industrialization in Africa was lauded by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, and the Prime Minister of Senegal, Mahammed Dionne.
