Currently the world has 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 15 and 24. A situation that provides a unique opportunity for countries to see their economies thrive, as detailed in UNFPA’s 2014 State of the World Population report titled “The Power of 1.8 Billion”.
The potential economic gains would be realized through a “demographic dividend,” which can occur when a county’s working age population is larger than the population that is dependent and younger, the report shows.
This is something that Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund said we must achieve.
SOUNDBITE (English), Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund:
“It’s important that we capitalize on the energy, the vibrancy, and the innovation and the creativity of young people to make the world a better place.”
One young person looking to do just that is 25-five-year-old Tunisian, Samàh Krichah, who wants to empower youth in her home country of Tunisia through participation in the democratic process.
Krichah, a youth advocate who works for the UNFPA, and her peers are using social media to provide young Tunisians with the tools to express themselves.
They have created a website “Ken jit rais” - Arabic for “If I Was President” where anyone can leave a message on what they expect from their new government.
The ideas gathered this way will be offered to the newly elected president later this year.
SOUNDBITE (French), Samàh Krichah, 26, Youth Advocate:
“Maybe he will be inspired by it, or consult it so that he sees a little of what people think of tomorrow’s Tunisia.”
By focusing on young people, a demographic dividend of this magnitude has the potential to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and raise living standards and catapult economies forward.
SOUNDBITE (English), Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund:
“By making sure that we give them access to quality education, skills development, entrepreneurship training, access to credit and participation in good governance in their countries.”
Krichah is making sure the latter happens as she went to the poles and cast her ballot to help decide Tunisia’s future.
