“The International Conference on Nutrition, which has just been held here in FAO Headquarters in Rome, is a milestone in the global effort to end hunger and malnutrition. We’ve had the Pope, kings, queens, princesses, vice-presidents, and senior government ministers from over a hundred and seventy of these countries; agriculture, health, water and sanitation, finance, education, all coming here with a common purpose, which is to improve diets and raise levels of nutrition.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Thompson - Senior Nutritionist and ICN2 Coordinator at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO):
“The reason why we have been holding this International Conference on Nutrition, and the reason why we have endorsed the Rome Declaration on Nutrition pledging to end hunger and malnutrition, is because of the large number of persistent levels of malnutrition. 800 million go to bed hungry, two billion have micronutrient deficiencies, and millions of children are either wasted, which is acutely malnourished, or stunted, or chronically malnourished. In the 21st century this is just not acceptable.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Thompson - Senior Nutritionist and ICN2 Coordinator at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO):
“We need a mechanism for targeting, for indicators, and a mechanism for holding those who have signed up to the Rome Declaration to be accountable to the public.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Leslie Amoroso, Programme Officer, Nutritionist (FAO):
“Global problems require global solutions and therefore only an international conference like the second International Conference on Nutrition can legitimate member countries and also other stakeholders to take commitments to fight hunger and malnutrition.”

A senior Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official said today that the International Conference on Nutrition held in Rome was “a milestone in the global effort to end hunger and malnutrition.”
Brian Thompson, who is a Senior Nutritionist at FAO and Coordinator of the Second International Conference on Nutrition (#ICN2), said world leaders gathered in Rome “with a common purpose, which is to improve diets and raise levels of nutrition.”
FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) – joint-host of #ICN2 – called on the international community to strengthen inter-governmental cooperation to enhance nutrition everywhere, especially in developing countries.
The reason for holding the Conference, Thompson said, was “because of the large number of persistent levels of malnutrition. 800 million go to bed hungry, two billion have micronutrient deficiencies, and millions of children are either wasted, which is acutely malnourished, or stunted, or chronically malnourished.
In the 21st century, he added, “this is just not acceptable.”
Thomson pointed out that the Rome Declaration on Nutrition pledges to end hunger and malnutrition. He said “we need a mechanism for targeting, for indicators, and a mechanism for holding those who have signed up to the Rome Declaration to be accountable to the public.”
More than half the world’s population is adversely affected by some form of malnutrition, including overweight or obesity. Some 805 million people are malnourished and micronutrient deficiencies lead to poor growth and ill health, including blindness, brain damage and early death.
FAO’s Programme Officer, Nutritionist Leslie Amoroso, said “global problems require global solutions and therefore only an international conference like the second International Conference on Nutrition can legitimate member countries and also other stakeholders to take commitments to fight hunger and malnutrition.”
The Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) is an inclusive inter-governmental meeting on nutrition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The two main outcome documents of the conference are the Rome Declaration on Nutrition: a political commitment document, and the Framework for Action: a technical guide for implementation.
