Top United Nations envoy for Somalia welcomed the inauguration of Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan as the leader of the newly formed Interim South West Administration (ISWA), calling it “a big step forward in the federation of the country.”

The inauguration ceremony, held yesterday in the regional capital Baidoa. was also attended by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Somali government officials and high ranking representatives of the African Union and the European Union.

President Hassan Sheikh called it a “big day in Somalia’s history”.

Newly inaugurated regional leader Sharif Hassan promised to “put all our efforts into building an administration that has the capacity, knowledgeable and experience” with ultimate goal of reconciliation and defeat of al Shabaab.

The Interim South West Administration, comprising the regions of Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle, was established in June this year, after extensive negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia and its international and regional partners.
