The United Nations peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan is stepping up its military patrolling in Grater Pibor Administration in parts of Jonglei State in a bid to improve protection of civilians and establish a better security environment.
The peacekeepers patrol -that starts at dawn from the UNMISS camp- uses infantry combat vehicle (ICV) to reach the rough and distant areas around greater Pibor Administration area. As for the terrain, the environment is frequently impassable with few paths and muddy dirt-roads. Vehicles can hardly make it out of the towns.
While on patrols, the ‘blue helmets’ arrived at a village called Manyeran. They camp for some hours and prepare to give the villagers veterinary and medical services. People in in this area depend on animals for their livelihood; however, local veterinary services continue to remain scarce and costly.
Fighting between the South Sudan Army (SPLA) and former rebel David Yau Yau militia group had forced almost the entire population of Pibor County to flee into the bush. Yau Yau rebelled against South Sudan’s ruling party (SPLM) after the April 2010 elections when, as an independent candidate, he lost his campaign to represent Gumuruk–Boma constituency in Pibor county at Jonglei state assembly.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) welcomes the signature of the agreement reached in Addis Ababa on 9 May 2014 between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (Cobra Faction) on the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Greater Pibor County, Jonglei State.
During their patrol the peacekeepers treated twenty six patients and around three hundred and thirty five animals received treatment.
