7. SOUNDBITE (English) David Nabarro, UN Special Envoy on Ebola:
“The response is now being adapted, to the intensity of transmission, as well as to the context in which it is taking place. So you have a slightly different response in border area compared with an interior, rural area, and a very different response in urban areas compared with rural areas.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) David Nabarro, UN Special Envoy on Ebola:
“From my point of view, actually we are not doing that badly because we are now seeing increasing numbers of areas where there is very low or even zero transmissions, particularly in rural Liberia and also in eastern Sierra Leone. But yes, there are other areas where transmission is still quite high, and that is of course of concern because, if it is high in any part of the region, it can come back. We’ve seen that before. So, we have to keep working on it until it is all gone.”

Storyline

The leader of the UN’s fight against Ebola said today he was “inspired” by the progress in the battle against the disease, but the international community will have to keep working on it, “until it is gone.”

David Nabarro, the UN’s Special Envoy on Ebola, who returned from Africa this week, told a press briefing Thursday, “I was really inspired by the progress since I was last in the region which was in September. Big shifts in the quality and coverage of the response.

He said the United Nations and its partners have been flexible in the struggle and is more synchronized with the agencies involved, and with local authorities.

Local communities are beginning to own the problem, he said, and increase their participation in the solutions, he said.

He said he was “confident” that the UN was heading in the right direction.

He said, “The response is now being adapted d to the intensity of transmission as well as to the context in which it is taking place. So you have a slightly different response in border area compared with an interior, rural area, and a very different response in urban areas compared with rural areas.”

Nabarro said, “From my point of view, actually we are not doing that badly because we are now seeing increasing numbers of areas where there is very low or even zero transmissions, particularly in rural Liberia and also in eastern Sierra Leone.

“But yes there are other areas where transmission is still quite high, and that is of course of concern because if it is high in any part of the region, it can come back. We’ve seen that before. So we have to keep working on it until it is all gone.”
