The Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), Anthony Banbury, today (11 December) travelled to Freetown where he conducted a series of meetings, including with President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone, one of the three hardest-hit countries, together with Guinea and Liberia, is among the poorest in the world.

The visit comes one day after Time magazine recognized the Ebola responders as “Person of the Year.” The United Nations congratulated the front line workers in the field battling Ebola on their recognition by the magazine.

Banbury participated in a briefing at the former Special Court for Sierra Leone and later met with military logisticians at the British Council on the western area surge. The latest effort to contain Ebola in the Sierra Leone capital.

To date, close to 18,000 cases of Ebola have been reported in West Africa with more than 6,300 deaths, according to WHO, and Sierra Leone now has the highest total number of reported cases with 7,897 cases reported to date.
