UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, today praised the US Senate’s release of a report on torture, as “shining light on a dark area.”
In his annual end of the year press conference, Ban also said the recent climate change meeting in Lima was the most encouraging he has seen in his eight years as Secretary General; the Ebola response is working but must be continued, and that a “lack of political will” is denying the Palestinian people from “what they should enjoy as human beings.”
He also welcomed the announcement of improved relations between the United States and Cuba.
When asked about the senate report, Ban said, “the release of the torture report by the U.S. senate shows that torture is still taking place in many parts around the world."
He said, “The prohibition of torture is an absolute principle. There are no situations which it should be used, under any circumstances.”
The report, he said, “is to be commended (for) shining “light on what happens in the dark area.”
Referring to the climate conference in Lima, Ban said, “All governments, along with business and others, now agree they must curb the growth in emissions. In my eight years as Secretary-General – this was the eighth conference of parties - this was the most encouraging conference of parties I have attended.”
On Ebola, he said, “the response strategy is working, and we are beginning to see improvements. But now is not the time to ease up on efforts. As long as there is one case of Ebola, the risk remains. On the Palestinian Israeli situation the Secretary General repeated his call for both sides to sit down to negotiations.
He said, “Unfortunately because of lack of political will of concerned parties the Palestinian people have not been able to enjoy what they should enjoy as a human being.
He said, he had been alerted in advance to the Cuba announcement, and, “this news is very positive. . I’d like to thank President Barak Obama, of the United States and President Raul Castro for taking this important step in normalizing relations.”
