Storyline

The World Health Organization is fighting Ebola in Sierra Leone, with, among other things a fleet of motorbikes.

The agency has hired and is fueling more than 100 bikers to go into the provinces to spread the word on Ebola, passing on hints on how to avoid it, and, among other messages, not to hide suspected cases.

At the request of the government, WHO has agreed to provide funds for hiring 114 motorbikes with drivers and fuel for 4 weeks to strengthen Ebola awareness.

The intensive face-to-face campaign seeks to reach between 150,000 and 200,000 people.

The motorbikes drivers will also help in collection of blood samples, swabs and dispatch to laboratory facilities.

The motorbikes will play a key role in smoothing the ongoing Western Area Surge in a city where traffic is often an issue, the agency said.

John Mac Dennis, a fleet manager for WHO in Sierra Leone, helped fuel the motorcyclists prior to leaving on the awareness campaign. “Today we are fueling 114 motorcycles that are going out into the districts to spread out Ebola awareness messages. This is done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and WHO.”

The motor-bike riders are engaging passengers and other vulnerable groups with Ebola prevention messages as well as positive messages of the survival rate of Ebola patients who have sought early medical help. These messages are aimed at helping to reduce the number of people who are hiding suspected cases of close family members.

One driver told WHO “This is called Ebola, we are against that. Ebola is in West Africa, because Ebola is dangerously killing our people. A lot of our friends, our families, our elders are gone through this disease and we are against that. That is why we are riding our motorcycle to fight against this deadly disease called Ebola.”

Another driver, Ishmael, said he and the other drivers are very thankful for the help WHO and hope this campaign will help in the fight against Ebola. “My name is Ishmael; we are here today to fight against the violent disease called Ebola. We are tired of this Ebola. Most of our loved ones and some of our friends and colleagues are gone through this Ebola. So we are really tired and give thanks and appreciate WHO and other organizations which have come prepared to fight against this Ebola. So thank you very much.”
