Storyline

A year after South Sudan’s conflict erupted, the United Nations peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan is stepping up its military patrols.

In one of the affected states - Upper Nile – three to four patrols are now being conducted on a daily basis with a hope of reassuring the local communities that life can come back to normal.

Upper Nile state now has about 18,500 internally displaced across different UN locations, in Malakal, Melut and Nasser.

During this year-long unrest, different locations in Upper Nile State changed hands between the government and rebel forces.

The town of Malakal has been of strategic importance. As a state capital of Upper Nile State, many big fights have taken place there, and the government is now in control of the town, which has to date changed hands six times.

SOUNDBITE: (English): Cpt Nikhil, INDBATT1:
"We have been able to bring sense of normality in the town but still there is a long way to go you can see that the market is open now people have started coming in huge number earlier when the crisis started on Malakal people were really scared even go out of the IDP camp to the market now the government agencies have come secretariats have started functioning from this town.”

The last big confrontation in Malakal town was in mid- March, and there have been ongoing skirmishes in surrounding areas like Doleib Hill located 30 kilometers away and areas like Renk.

Thousands of civilians caught in the conflict, nonetheless, remained wary that the situation can return to normal - especially because there has been no peace settlement to the ongoing crisis.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Abana Jerial Adok Jok, IDP Malakal:

“People still doubt whether the peace will come or not even when people go outside POC site to the town they still doubt that may be another crisis will erupt they might be attack.”

The conflict in South Sudan erupted in mid- December 2013, forcing almost all of the population in Malakal to flee into the UNMISS POC site. Thousands others have sought refuge in neighboring countries.
