Storyline

The Jordanian ambassador to the United Nations said today that the Arab Group at the UN had agreed on revisions to a resolution to be sent to the Security Council that calls for an end of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar said the revised resolution could be sent to the Security Council as early as Tuesday, but said it was possible it could be held over to the new year.

The original draft resolution, submitted by Jordan on 17 December, highlighted, “the urgent need to attain, no later than 12 months after the adoption of this resolution, a just, lasting and comprehensive peaceful solution that brings an end to the Israeli occupation since 1967 and fulfils the vision of two independent, democratic and prosperous states, Israel and a sovereign, contiguous and viable State of Palestine living side by side in peace and security within mutually and internationally recognized borders.”

It also called for, “a full and phased withdrawal of Israeli security forces which will end the occupation that began in 1967 over an agreed transition period in a reasonable timeframe, not to exceed the end of 2017.”
The Arab group has 22 members.
