The new Head of the United Nations Mission for Emergency Ebola Response (UNMEER) Tuesday (6 January) told Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf the UN is “here to support you.”
Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed from Mauritania, who this week took over as head of UNMEER, said, “Whatever decision you take, these are your people, this is your country. We will be here to support you.”
Ahmed said, ““For me, and I want to underline this, as an African first and also as my belief as the new SRSG, the leadership, the driving seat, is yours. Your decisions will be respected by us. There is no equivocal discussion about this.”
UNMEER has reported that Liberia has made progress in combating the outbreak and President Sirleaf has announced that Liberia will reopen schools in February, six months after they were closed because of fears about the spread of the Ebola virus.
The new Special representative held meetings throughout the day, including with UNMEER staff and response partners.
At and Ebola Crisis Management Centre he expressed his hope that Liberia will soon be declared free of Ebola
Ahmed will visit Sierra Leone Wednesday and Guinea next week.
