Storyline

The number of refugees and migrants arriving in Greece this year, passed the half million mark yesterday (20 Oct) according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.

The ultimate destinations for most of them are countries of western and northern Europe.

The majority will take a route that goes from Greece, to FYR Macedonia and then onwards through Serbia.

At the border town of Presevo, Serbia they undergo through a registration process before being allowed to continue their north-bound journey.

Once inside Serbia, all the refugee and migrants must register at the centre in Presevo.

Having a passport or other ID makes this process easier. Greek documentation also helps, but it takes time.

Hafez Naddaf, has been on a move for almost a month. In Syria, he was a second-year medical student. But the war ended that.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hafez, Syrian Refugee:
“I’m not leaving my country just to live or sit around. No, I’m leaving my country to study, to complete my studies and become a doctor.”

Hafez has been traveling with his cousins, but he very nearly did not survive Greece sea crossing.

UNHCR works with the authorities, UNICEF, the Red Cross and other international NGOs to offer around the clock, food, blankets, raincovers and medical care.

But this it is just a brief stop on their journey. After completing registration process they board buses which will take them to the northern border of Serbia, to cross to the next country, Croatia.
