“The tensions around the Haram Al-Sharif Temple Mount have the potential to add a religious dimension to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that could be exploited by extremists on both sides, with potentially dangerous regional implications.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“The level of incitement is utterly unacceptable. It is critical for all parties to avoid provocative rhetoric and actions that can further inflame passions in an already overheated environment. It is equally critical that Israel exercise maximum restraint and make sure that security measures are properly calibrated.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“This is at heart a political conflict that will require a serious negotiation process by two partners willing to make the necessary compromises to reach the long-desired goal of a two-state solution. The Quartet remains committed to working with all relevant parties – on the ground, regionally and internationally – to create the conditions for a return to meaningful bilateral negotiations.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“I hope this opportunity will provide such an occasion that the leaders in the region realise that there is no point, it is needleless to continue this kind of military option and I have been repeatedly saying that there is no such military option, there should be a political solution. Now, I hope that President Assad fully realises thorough his meeting with President Putin, in the sense that I would really hope that this will change some dynamics on the ground.”

The UN Secretary-General urged on Friday (23 Oct) the Israeli and Palestinian governments to find an end to the latest eruption of violence, which he said has the potential of adding a “religious dimension” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Since the flare-up of attacks in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jenin, Tulkarm and Nablus, the UN reports that 47 Palestinians and seven Israelis have been killed and more than 5,000 Palestinians and some 70 Israelis have been injured.
Addressing reporters after a three-day mission to the region, including Jordan, to ease tensions, Ban Ki-moon said, “the tensions around the Haram Al Sharif and Temple Mount have the potential to add a religious dimension to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that could be exploited by extremists on both sides, with potentially dangerous regional implications.”
He said he welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assurances that Israel had no intention of changing the status quo of the holy sites, which many Muslims believe are under threat.
He also added that the level of incitement from both sides was “utterly unacceptable”, saying that it was “critical for all parties to avoid provocative rhetoric and actions that can further inflame passions in an already overheated environment.”
The Secretary-General urged Israel “to exercise maximum restraint and make sure that security measures are properly calibrated”, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to harness the energy of his people, particularly young people, towards a peaceful direction rather than resorting to violent means.
“This is at heart a political conflict that will require a serious negotiation process by two partners willing to make the necessary compromises to reach the long-desired goal of a two-state solution,” the Secretary-General said, adding that “the Quartet remains committed to working with all relevant parties – on the ground, regionally and internationally – to create the conditions for a return to meaningful bilateral negotiations.”
Meanwhile, asked to comment on the recent visit of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Russia, the Secretary-General said “I hope this opportunity will provide such an occasion that the leaders in the region realise that there is no point, it is needleless to continue this kind of military option and I have been repeatedly saying that there is no such military option, there should be a political solution. Now, I hope that President Assad fully realises thorough his meeting with President Putin, in the sense that I would really hope that this will change some dynamics on the ground.”
