Storyline

The United Nations celebrated its 70th Anniversary today (23 Oct) with a concert featuring the Korean Broadcasting System Traditional Music Orchestra and special guests, while the Headquarters buildings where illuminated in blue.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon open the festivities, telling the audience that “over the decades we have helped to bring freedom to millions, dismantle colonialism, defeat apartheid, and defend human rights for all regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation.”

Today, he said, “our blue helmets and humanitarian workers work on the front lines of conflict and disaster. We fight poverty, hunger, and disease. We stand against corruption, impunity and injustice.”

Ban said that while the work of the organization “might not be perfect” without the United Nations “our world would be a far bleaker place.”

The Secretary-General highlighted “the adoption of the inspiring 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations has pointed the way towards progress for all human kind.”

The musical performance included UN Messenger of Peace Lang Lang, Korean K-pop duo Davichi, the Harlem Gospel Choir, and Kim Hae-sook.
The Korean Broadcasting System Traditional Orchestra performed a rich array of musical pieces including the Korean folk song Arirang, which was registered by UNESCO on its “Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists” in 2012.

The UN Headquarters in New York will be lit up for two nights, concluding on 24 October, which has been celebrated as UN Day since 1948.

The Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the Organization officially came into being.

Among the famous landmarks taking part in the 'Turn the World UN Blue' campaign will be the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Great Wall of China, Russia's Hermitage Museum, and the ancient city of Petra in Jordan.
