“Mali, as you all know, has been riven by conflict resulting in very large-scale internal and external displacement, internally displaced and refugees in the region. We have seen as a result of the recently agreed peace agreement, we’ve seen significant return of those that have been displaced. And now that number of returnees has gone above 400 thousand, 423 thousand.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, Director of the Operational Division at OCHA:
“I see women at the centre of the recovery. I visit a number of projects which were small enterprises, giving employment led by women, and the energy and the results that were being achieved were hugely impressive. I also visited a number of schools and there it was really great to see so many children back at school.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, Director of the Operational Division at OCHA:
“There still is a lot of insecurity, a lot of challenges around the delivery of aid, getting access, but the humanitarian aid is being delivered across the north. And we are, as a humanitarian community, you know, gaining more and more access every day. That’s also why we need our donors to understand that as we gain more access we actually need more resources to deliver more and deliver better. So, again, this is absolutely a top priority for humanitarians, which is now to capitalize on the opportunities of getting to people who have been without very basic services for quite some time.”

Upon his return from Mali, John Ging today (10 Nov) said that as a result of the recent peace agreement in Mali, “we’ve seen significant return of those that have been displaced.”
Ging, who is the Director of the Operational Division at OCHA, said the number of returnees “has gone above 400 thousand,” but noted that over 100 thousand have not yet returned to their homes.
The humanitarian official highlighted the role played by women in the recovery. He said “I see women at the centre of the recovery,” noting that he had visited a number of projects being led by women, “and the energy and the results that were being achieved were hugely impressive.”
He also commented on the reopening of schools. He said “it was really great to see so many children back at school.”
Nevertheless, Ging pointed out that “there still is a lot of insecurity, a lot of challenges around the delivery of aid, getting access, but the humanitarian aid is being delivered across the north.”
He said that it was “absolutely a top priority for humanitarians” to “capitalize on the opportunities of getting to people who have been without very basic services for quite some time.”
The Malian Government and a Tuareg-led rebel alliance signed a landmark peace deal to end years of fighting in the country's north, which has been riven by conflict resulting in very large-scale internal and external displacement.
