“The momentum in Vienna needs to not be missed. It is, think about it, a few weeks, a few months ago, where we were where in fact we never dreamed to have the Russian Federation and the Americans sitting and heading the same table, and on one side having Saudi Arabia and on the other one Iran, plus other countries. So that type of momentum that we have been waiting for, we need now to support.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Staffan de Mistura, United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria:
“The UN is not calling this meeting. We are supportive. We are participating. We are getting the job from them, from the whole meeting. And I must tell you this is something I really welcome, because you know very well when the UN alone calls for a meeting and starts asking for certain type of things without the fact that the big players are involved, it makes it more difficult.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Staffan de Mistura, United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria:
“They want to make sure that big countries like Russian Federation, and Saudi Arabia, and Iran come around the table and come up with a political process. Then we pick up the pieces and we run with it. Not the one of asking and imposing a certain formula. We have tried for four years, it didn’t work. Now is time for the countries to actually pick up those challenges.”

Ahead of this weekend’s talks on Syria, the United Nations and Arab League Envoy to the war-torn country said today (10 Nov) the “the momentum in Vienna needs to not be missed.”
The Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, said that up until recently “we never dreamed to have the Russian Federation and the Americans sitting and heading the same table, and on one side having Saudi Arabia and on the other one Iran, plus other countries.”
He said that this was “the type of momentum that we have been waiting for, we need now to support”
De Mistura stressed that the meeting is being headed by the United States and the Russian Federation, not the United Nations.
He said “the UN is not calling this meeting. We are supportive. We are participating. We are getting the job from them, from the whole meeting. And I must tell you this is something I really welcome, because you know very well when the UN alone calls for a meeting and starts asking for certain type of things without the fact that the big players are involved, it makes it more difficult.”
The Envoy said the UN will not be “imposing a certain formula” and added, “we have tried for four years, it didn’t work. Now is time for the countries to actually pick up those challenges.”
