Storyline

The US Ambassador to the UN said today (01 Dec) at a press briefing “the Russian-ISIL effort is focused on something that we are also focused on”, adding that Russia should concentrate its airpower on fighting Islamic State rather than on groups critical to a political transition.

Samantha Power who will lead the presidency of the Security Council for the month of December told reporters in New York “much of the Russian-ISIL effort is focused on something that we are also focused on, which is financing and the need to halt ISIL’s ability to access funds whether through oil sails or to moving money through the international financial system.”
However, she also stressed “we, again, wished that we would see from Russia more of a concentration of its airpower on ISIL rather than on the groups that themselves are going to critical to actually be part of a political transition.”

The UN Security Council called on 20 November on all countries that can do so to take the war on terrorism to territory controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria and Iraq and destroy its safe haven, warning that the group intends to mount further terror attacks like those that devastated Paris and Beirut last week.

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-member body declared the group’s terrorist attacks abroad “a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security” following the attacks it perpetrated in Sousse (Tunisia), Ankara (Turkey), over Sinai (Egypt) with the downing of a Russian plane, and in Beirut and Paris.
