Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived today (04 Dec) at Paris City Hall during his second trip to the city this week, as negotiations on a climate agreement continue at the UN climate change conference (COP21).

Ban added his name to the list of participants of the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, taking place on the margins of COP21.

The Secretary-General met with the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, as well as with his Special Envoy on Cities and Climate Change, Michael Bloomberg. Ban also met with the Mayor of Seoul, Park Won-soon.

Addressing the High Level Closing of the Summit of Local Leaders, Bloomberg said “mayors and local leaders recognize the power of collaboration and the spirit of partnership is flourishing.”

During his remarks Ban said “here in the great city of light I urge to continue to shine your light on a more sustainable future. Ladies and gentleman, let us work together to make this world better for all and friendly to our planet earth.”

Since the beginning of the week, governments have been meeting to adopt what it is hoped will be an ambitious global climate change agreement, which is aiming to limit global temperature rise to below two degrees Celsius. The UN chief said mayors and local leaders “are essential to this effort.”
