United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met today (05 Dec) with actor and UN Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, on the margins of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21).

The Secretary-General was interviewed by DiCaprio who is producing a documentary on climate change.

Ban and DiCaprio held a lively conversation and the Secretary-General thanked the actor for his involvement in the cause.

He said “your message, your celebrity, can reach billions of people. And I thank you for committing yourself to making this world better for all.”

For his part, DiCaprio told Ban “the whole world is waiting to see that this is all a big success, so, you are the man here.”

Earlier in the day, the Secretary-General met with a delegation of US Senators attending the conference.

He briefed the delegation on the state of the discussions on climate change so far.

The Secretary-General welcomed the constructive engagement and underscored the critical leadership of the United States in achieving a strong and ambitious universal agreement in Paris.

He stressed the vital role of American legislators in supporting action on the ground after Paris.
