United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Parliamentarians in Paris today (05 Dec) to exercise “global leadership” to ensure any agreement reached at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) will go into effect.
Addressing the Opening Session of the Parliamentary meeting on the occasion of COP21, hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the French Parliament, Ban said “there is no national boundaries at this time. You may represent France or some other countries, but climate change does not respect national passports. You’ll have to be one single global citizens.”
Later on, the Secretary-General addressed the High-Level closing session of Action Day, an event attended by French President Francois Hollande, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, and Former US Vice-President Al Gore, among others.
Ban told the meeting “we need to rapidly expand and accelerate climate action at every level – from the local to the global. We must go further and we must go faster in line with what science requires to limit temperature rise to less than 2 degrees Celsius. The United Nations system will continue to support climate action in partnership with all stakeholders.”
Officials from around the world today reached a climate change draft agreement. Climate talks now enter next phase, with the toughest decisions to be made laying ahead.
