Storyline

As the United Nations Paris Climate Change Conference – also known as COP21 – enters its final week, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed audiences at a series of sideline events, in a bid to push world leaders to broker a deal to avert a potential “climate catastrophe”.

Speaking today (07 Dec) at the Mashable/UN Foundation "Earth to Paris" summit at Le Petit Palais in Paris, Ban reminded audiences “there are many things that you can really change, many small things, which you may think “This is negligible”. But there is nothing negligible.”

Outside the palace, Ban and his wife, Yoo Soon-taek, met with American actor and activist Alec Baldwin, who joins a string of other high-profile Hollywood stars attending the conference. Later he also met with US Politician and Activist Al Gore and the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Addressing a High-Level session at the COP21, Ban said “centuries of human endeavour and innovation have given the world great gifts. Yet we have also sown the potential seeds of our own destruction. The clock is ticking towards climate catastrophe. The world is expecting more from you than half-measures and incremental approaches.”

He also said the time was right for to reach long-lasting solutions to stave off the devastating effects of climate change.

“Our goal must be transformation. We have less than just four days of negotiations left, some top issues still remain. A political momentum like this may not come again,” Ban said.
