Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced today (8 Dec) in Paris that parties in the Syrian peace process are scheduled to meet in New York on December 18 if Syrian opposition groups can form a unified front.
Addressing reporters after a meeting, Ban expressed hope “we’ll have a firm and solid basis so that the ceasefire will be launched, as well as the political process begun.”
The Secretary-General said he expected that all parties will make a contribution and that they “will have a good meeting.”
Syria's rebel and opposition groups are meeting in Saudi Arabia this week to try to produce a common negotiating platform.
Moments earlier, Ban and Kerry had participated on Business Forum of the Lima-Paris Agenda, on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21)
Ban told business leaders to leave Paris with “a clear message to your consumers, employees, peers and governments, that how we do business today will determine if we can do business in the future.”
The Secretary-General today held a series of bilateral talks, including with the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources of Saudi Arabia, Ali Bin Al Naimi and Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of the Environment, Forests and Climate Change of India, on the pending brackets on the path to a climate agreement.
