The second is that Facebook receives every week one million of notifications of messaging, of messages which might contain this type of incitement.”

Storyline

The Head of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), Jean-Paul Laborde, today (17 Dec) said that it was a “big challenge” to find “the necessary balance between the protection of the liberties and on the other side the necessary protection of the lives of the citizens of this world.”

Speaking to reporters after a behind-closed-doors meeting between members of the Security Council, private sector representatives and members of civil society, Laborde said that it was necessary to “be at the same pace” as terrorist organizations in order to defeat them “on their own territories” and added that “on their own territories means internet and social media.”

The Assistant Secretary-General pointed out that “Youtube has cancelled, deleted, 40 million videos promoting terrorism in the last two years” while Facebook “receives every week one million of notifications of messaging, of messages which might contain this type of incitement.”

He said these companies “don’t want to be the bad guys. They want to collaborate closely with us in order to find solutions not to allow these people to incite the others to commit terrorist acts or to be recruited.”
