“The two most important issues are the launch of a political negotiation and a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities. They are the most pressing issues and they are interrelated. We cannot have a peace process without a ceasefire; and without a ceasefire peace talks cannot continue to produce results. So, we are hoping this meeting can achieve further consensus on these two main issues and generate more concerted action. The United Nations must continue to play an active role in this process.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, participated in the meeting of the International Syria Support Group that is taking place off campus, today (18 Dec) at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel.

The various delegations, including foreign ministers from Russia, Turkey, China, and the United States attended the meeting.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters “the two most important issues are the launch of a political negotiation and a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.”

Yi said these issues are “interrelated” as “we cannot have a peace process without a ceasefire; and without a ceasefire peace talks cannot continue to produce results.”

The Foreign Minister said the United Nations “must continue to play an active role in this process.”

The Security Council has also scheduled a meeting and consultations later today.
