“This is not a forum for renegotiation. It is instead an opportunity to work practically, collaboratively and quickly. We will encourage and accelerate progress on all fronts. Facilitate dialog and overcome difficulties in implementation and I reiterate that we are all, all of us, duty bound to take all necessary actions to ensure the agreement ii fulfilled, because the fulfillment of the agreement means peace.”

“To the people of South Sudan, in this season of hope, forgiveness and renewal, it is my sincere hope that this Christmas 2015 is the last that will be celebrated in the context of conflict. The greatest gift that could be given to the people of South Sudan by its leaders is the gift of peace and the promise of reconciliation and healing.”

The very first meeting was held today (22 Dec) in Juba, South Sudan, that brought parties to conflict in South Sudan together in order to form a Transitional Government of National Unity as per Peace Agreement signed in August this year.
The meeting which was chaired by Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) Chairman Festus Mogae brought together both parties to the conflict, former detainees and the various stake holders to the Peace Agreement.
The JMEC Chairman opened the meeting by thanking all parties for finally meeting to implement the Peace agreement. He then encouraged the parties present to work together in the spirit of the season.
Mogae outlined the work process ahead: “This is not a forum for renegotiation. It is instead an opportunity to work practically, collaboratively and quickly. In his opening remarks, Mogae also sent a message to South Sudanese people:

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is one of the stakeholders in the South Sudan Peace Agreement. The Mission’s Mandate was extended on 14 December 2015. In the new mandate support was given to JMEC and the implementation of the Peace Agreement.
Both parties have agreed to continue dialogue throughout the Holiday so that the Peace agreement moves forward without any further delays.
The representatives of the SPLMA/IO arrived in Juba on 21 December 2015. The delegation is headed by Hassan Ramadan Lanky who is the Executive Officer in the Office of the leader of the SPLMA/IO, Riek Machar.
