Storyline

After a visit to Bentiu, South Sudan, the chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, the former president of Botswana, Festus Mogae, today (14 Jan) said he has witnessed first-hand the suffering caused by the conflict.

Mogae visited the protection of civilian’s site in Bentiu and met with the displaced persons as well as government officials. He described the living conditions as dire and called for an end to all acts of violence.

SOUNDBITE (English) Festus Mogae, Chairman, JMEC:
“People live in a very dire condition, I have confirmed for myself, the children and the women especially and the aged, but actually everybody. It is very bad situation; therefore strengthening my determination to work for peace.”

He further stressed that violence must stop, cessation of hostilities must take place and all other violence must stop. People want peace and security of their persons because they want to be able to go back to their home without being killed, he added.

Mogae's visit was intended to provide him an opportunity to meet with government officials, representatives of South Sudanese society, as well as humanitarian agencies, the Monitoring and Verification Teams of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism (CTSAMM) and United Nations officials.

He left to Addis Ababa this afternoon for further meetings in support of the implementation of the Agreement to Resolve the Conflict in South Sudan (ARCSS), according to the JMEC statement.
