Storyline

Uruguayan Ambassador Elbio Rosselli told reporters today (18 Jan) that despite concerns over tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura has received assurances that this will not affect the Syrian peace process.

Rosselli, who is President of the Security Council for the month of January, said that De Mistura, in his briefing to the Council via teleconference, had said that ministers of foreign affairs of both Iran and Saudi Arabia had assured him that “the incident is completely isolated from the consideration of the agenda of (resolution) 2254.”

The Council, Rosselli said, had also “reiterated its very strong, unanimous support for the role that Mr. de Mistura is playing, has played, and will continue to play; and the central aspect of the process in the terms of resolution 2254.”

The Council in December unanimously approved a resolution endorsing a peace process designed to end Syria’s civil war after six years of fighting. Iran and Saudi Arabia are key players in that process.
