Former Côte d'Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo pled not guilty today (28 Jan) to charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
The charges stem from the violence that ensued after Gbagbo lost in the 2010 elections but refused to step down.
Gbagbo and militia leader Charles Ble Goude were instructed of the charges and presented their not guilty pleas.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda addressed the court and said “crimes such as those at the centre of this case, murder, rape, inhumane acts, persecution, crimes against humanity, that threaten the peace, the security and the well-being of not only the affected communities but all of humanity. Whoever perpetrates mass violence does so against the world entire.”
Close to 3,000 people died after violence erupted between rival militias in 2010 and 2011 while Gbagbo remained in the presidential palace.
